New Mexico State University has announced the departure of Athletic Director Mario Moccia, effective immediately. President Valerio Ferme appointed Amber Burdge as the acting athletics director, citing the need for a fresh start in the athletics program following recent issues. Moccia, who has been with the university since 2015, was the leader during a hazing scandal and a shooting that rocked the athletic program. Former NMSU Board of Regents member Bob Gallagher believes Moccia should have been fired earlier and criticized the previous board for not taking action. Ferme, on his first day as president, decided to part ways with Moccia. Under Moccia’s leadership, NMSU joined Conference USA and achieved success in various sports. Ferme and Dr. Burdge will hold a press conference to address Moccia’s departure. This is a developing story and updates will be provided by KOAT.
