President-elect Donald Trump and his allies in Congress have pointed to President Joe Biden’s border policies as the cause of the recent deadly New Orleans truck attack, even though the perpetrator was a U.S. citizen. The attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was a Texas native and an Army veteran. Initially, Fox News had erroneously reported that the attacker had crossed the border from Mexico, but later clarified that he was born in the United States.
Despite the clarification, Trump and some of his allies continued to blame Biden’s open border policies for the attack. They argued that the current administration’s handling of the nation’s borders has led to an increase in violent crime and national security threats. Republicans like Donald Trump Jr., Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Rep. Mike Johnson used the attack as an opportunity to push the GOP platform of securing the border.
However, recent statistics show that only a minuscule fraction of migrants attempting to cross the border have ties to terrorism. Trump’s spokesperson defended his remarks, stating that criminals crossing the border have committed serious crimes in the country. Overall, the incident has reignited the debate over border security and immigration policies in the United States.
