Sri Lankan politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a surprise top contender for the country’s presidency, has gained recognition from regional superpower India despite his party’s past ties to China. Dissanayake, the leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), has seen a rise in popularity following his involvement in the Aragalaya protest movement that led to the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The JVP, once known for violent insurrections, has rebranded itself as an anticorruption coalition under Dissanayake’s leadership.
However, the JVP’s troubled past with the Tamil community and its reluctance to address human rights violations during the civil war have raised concerns. Additionally, Dissanayake’s economic policies, which now advocate for a pro-trade approach, differ from the party’s traditional socialist stance. The Institute of Political Economy has called for the renegotiation of Sri Lanka’s IMF agreement to address the country’s economic challenges.
As Sri Lanka prepares for the upcoming elections on September 21, Dissanayake faces the challenge of breaking the dominance of the two main political parties that have ruled the country since independence. The country’s economic recovery and future stability will depend on the next president’s ability to renegotiate debt agreements, implement realistic fiscal targets, and address corruption. Voters will ultimately decide if Dissanayake is the candidate who can deliver on these goals and bring about sustainable growth for Sri Lanka.
