The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission nominating committee has submitted four names to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham for consideration for appointment to the regulatory body. Among the nominees are current Commissioner James Ellison, state Sen. Greg Nibert, R-Roswell, Debra Hicks, and Blessing Chukwu. Ellison, with a background in energy integration, received unanimous support from the committee and is seen as bringing continuity and expertise to the commission. Nibert, a lawyer with legislative experience, was also unanimously supported. Hicks, an engineer with public service experience, and Chukwu, with regulatory experience in other states, were recommended by committee members for their diverse qualifications. The committee voted 4-3 to submit Hicks’ name and 5-2 to submit Chukwu’s name to the governor. The PRC plays a crucial role in ruling on utility rate increases, energy resources, and broadband infrastructure in the state. The nominating committee emphasized the importance of providing the governor with a range of choices for appointments to the commission. The nominees will now await Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s decision on the new appointments, which will shape the future direction and decision-making of the PRC in New Mexico.
