Boston Ballet principal soloist Michaela DePrince passed away at the age of 29, followed by her adoptive mother Elaine DePrince dying the next day due to an unrelated illness. Elaine died during a routine procedure in preparation for surgery, not knowing about Michaela’s passing beforehand. The family shared that the deaths of Michaela and Elaine were completely unrelated, despite the tragic timing. They have asked for privacy as they grieve these losses.
Michaela DePrince, born in Sierra Leone during the civil war, was adopted by Elaine DePrince alongside her friend from Africa due to rejection from other families because of her vitiligo. Elaine took both girls in, renaming them Michaela and Mia. Michaela had dreams of pursuing ballet since she was a child and achieved her goal of becoming a professional dancer, joining the Dance Theatre of Harlem and later becoming a principal soloist at Boston Ballet.
The news of Michaela’s death was shared on her Instagram, sparking an outpouring of support from the dance community. The cause of her death has not been revealed. Despite the tragic losses, Michaela’s legacy as a talented dancer and inspiring figure in the ballet world lives on. The family is mourning the deaths of both Michaela and Elaine, grateful for the support and love they have received during this difficult time.
