The viral TikTok earworm “Emergency Budots” has gained global popularity and shed light on the Filipino genre of electronic dance music known as budots. Created by DJ Johnrey Masbate in December, the remix of “Dr. Beat” by the Miami Sound Machine has been featured in over 500,000 videos on TikTok. The dance videos set to “Emergency Budots” have brought more recognition to the budots genre, which originated in Davao City, Philippines. DJ Love, known as the originator of budots music, began creating the genre in the early 2000s, but it had remained largely regional until now. TikTok users are now trying to emulate the budots dances in their videos, with some expressing awe at the movements and finding them more difficult than expected. Masbate hopes that the budots trend will bring more attention to Filipino culture, and believes that TikTok is helping to make that happen. Overall, the success of “Emergency Budots” on TikTok has not only brought attention to a lesser-known Filipino music genre but also showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.
