The flooding on the Pecos River and its tributaries, exacerbated by debris from summer wildfires, resulted in significant sediment build-up and infrastructure damage. Cleanup efforts before the storm worsened the situation. Houghtalin mentioned that the sustained rainfall could classify as a 1,000-year storm, emphasizing the extreme nature of the event. The flood commission’s mission is to protect the county from devastating floods by enhancing infrastructure and drainage systems. The report included aerial photos illustrating the severity of the flooding, demonstrating the urgent need for continued mitigation efforts in Chaves County.
