A recent IT outage affecting areas from Albuquerque to El Paso has prompted cybersecurity experts to emphasize the importance of treating such incidents as potential cyber attacks. Spartan Cyber Security owner and president Raphael Warren stressed that regardless of the cause of the outage, companies should respond as if they are under attack to protect their systems. The outage, which impacted the Sunport and the border, resulted in delays and cancellations at the airport and affected various industries, including airlines, banks, 911 call centers, and hospitals. American cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike is working to address the software issue causing the outage.
The Sunport outreach and marketing manager Leah Black described the situation as a national crisis that has disrupted the lives of travelers. Customs and Border Patrol officials are working to minimize the impact on international trade and travel. Warren emphasized that companies need to be proactive in safeguarding their systems, as technology vulnerabilities can be exploited by cyber attackers. It’s crucial for IT professionals to respond to such incidents as potential cyber threats, considering the impact they can have on operations and the broader community. The outage serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity measures in an increasingly interconnected digital landscape.
