New Mexico Ranks Fourth in Gender Parity for Elected Officials
According to a recent report, New Mexico has been ranked fourth overall in gender parity for elected officials in the United States. The Gender Parity Index, which measures the percentage of women in public offices compared to men, listed New Mexico in fourth place with a parity score of 45.6 out of 100 points. This is the first time in three years that New Mexico has not been ranked first in gender parity.
Despite never scoring an A in gender parity, New Mexico has made significant progress in recent years. The state has seen an increase in the number of women serving in the state legislature, growing from 20 percent in 1994 to 44 percent in 2024. Additionally, New Mexico has had the second-most total women serving as statewide executives in the country.
The report, released by RepresentWomen, a nonprofit organization, highlights the progress that has been made towards achieving gender parity in political representation. While the U.S. is more than halfway to gender parity overall, there is still work to be done to ensure that women can run, win, lead, and serve in elected positions.
The top spot in the Gender Parity Index went to Oregon, followed by Maine and Michigan. The report emphasizes the importance of continued support for women in office and the need for changes to be made at all levels of government to ensure sustained progress towards gender parity.
