Cornell University student activist requested to surrender to ICE

The Department of Justice has asked Cornell University student Momodou Taal, a U.S. visa holder and dual citizen of the UK and Gambia, to surrender to immigration authorities. Taal, who helped lead campus protests, received an email initiating the deportation process. The Justice Department has not specified when Taal is expected to surrender. Taal’s attorneys claim unidentified authorities previously showed up at Taal’s residence, raising concerns about his safety. The Trump administration has been targeting individuals involved in protests on college campuses, including the arrests of Columbia University students Mahmoud Khalil and Leqaa Kordia. The administration cited national security concerns and an obscure clause in the Immigration and Nationality Act to justify the arrests. This has led to fears among students and professors nationwide about the government targeting them for speaking out. Columbia University, the epicenter of the protests, agreed to demands outlined by the administration in an effort to restore federal funding, including banning masks at protests, modifying admissions processes, increasing campus security, and appointing a new senior vice provost. These actions have sparked new protests and raised concerns about free speech infringement. Protests are scheduled to resume at Columbia on Monday as students and faculty continue to push back against government interference in academic matters.
