New Federal Office Leases Reinstated Despite Resistance to Musk Team’s Reductions

During President Trump’s first week back in the White House, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has targeted underused federal buildings for lease cancellations in an effort to cut costs. The team has claimed credit for terminating leases for hundreds of properties across the country, saving an estimated $500 million. However, their efforts have faced pushback from lawmakers and agency officials who argue that canceling leases could undermine vital government services and conflict with the administration’s push for federal workers to return to the office.

The General Services Administration, which manages the federal government’s real estate portfolio, has reversed over 100 lease terminations, including properties like an Energy Department office in New Mexico and an office used by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers in Florida. The G.S.A. had initially released a list of over 440 federal properties that could be sold off, but removed the list the next day without explanation.

While administration officials believe that selling off underutilized office space and obsolete buildings will save taxpayers money, there have been challenges in implementing this policy. Since the start of Trump’s second term, the G.S.A. has sent out 827 lease termination notices and rescinded 117 of them. Despite the administration’s efforts to streamline the government’s real estate portfolio, the process has been marked by chaos and setbacks.
