Airman from the U.S. faces murder charges for the disappearance of woman in South Dakota since August

Airman Quinterius Chappelle, stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of 21-year-old Sahela Sangrait, whose badly decomposed body was found months after she disappeared. The exact relationship between Chappelle and Sangrait is unknown, and the Air Force has not provided any comment on the case. Chappelle, who entered the service in 2019, is being held in the Pennington County Jail with no bond set, and it is unclear if he has legal representation. The U.S. attorney’s office for South Dakota will prosecute the case.

Sangrait, a Native American, was last seen at a friend’s house in Eagle Butte before she disappeared. She had reportedly mentioned going to Box Elder, her hometown near the Air Force base, to retrieve some belongings before a planned trip to California. The investigation into Sangrait’s killing involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

Local authorities are urging anyone with information about Sangrait’s murder to contact the FBI’s Rapid City office. Ellsworth Air Force Base’s commander emphasized that airmen are held accountable for their actions, and those found in violation of military or civilian law will face consequences. The collaboration between local, state, and federal agencies in this case was commended by the sheriff’s office.
