Vasquez criticizes immigration agents for their handling of the incident involving high school athletes

Last week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents boarded a charter bus carrying high school athletes from Las Cruces to a swim meet in Albuquerque, sparking controversy. The agents, reportedly entering the bus to question students over objections from coaches, were criticized by state and local leaders for intimidating the students.

U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez held a press conference condemning the incident, stating that border patrol agents had no place harassing students. He demanded transparency from the Department of Homeland Security Secretary about the incident and suggested legislation to prevent such abuses.

While the American Federation of Teachers expressed concern about the agents’ behavior, the Republican Party sided with the border patrol, stating that they are protectors of the community. U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich criticized the border patrol agents for focusing on students rather than real problems like the fentanyl crisis.

Meanwhile, legislators in New Mexico addressed issues related to federal funding cuts and job terminations, expressing frustration with the Trump administration’s actions. Sen. Ben Ray Luján was named ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Media, while a budget resolution voting session highlighted partisan divisions.

As Democrats push back against Trump’s energy emergency declaration, seeking to prioritize renewable energy sources, the House and Senate continue to clash on various policy issues. The New Mexico delegation is actively working to address challenges faced by the state’s residents amid ongoing federal changes.
