‘Exploring Acequia Heritage: UNM Emeriti Professors Delve into ‘Water for the People’

University of New Mexico professors Enrique Lamadrid and José Rivera released their book “Water for the People: The Acequia Heritage of New Mexico in a Global Context” in 2023, shedding light on the traditional water management system of acequias. The book, praised for its contribution to history, culture preservation, and technological significance, highlights the importance of community cooperation in sustaining these systems. Inspired by their experiences at the Tribunal de las Aguas of Valencia in 2014, where the New Mexico Acequia Association was honored, Lamadrid and Rivera expanded their work to include global stories from countries like Spain, Chile, and the Philippines.

Their goal is to educate New Mexico’s youth about their heritage as “Water Defenders” and the resilience of acequias in the face of corporate and national water ownership. By sharing stories in an informal and engaging way, the authors hope to spark conversations and appreciation for acequia culture. The book invites readers to explore the deeper meaning of these irrigation canals and their vital role in sustaining communities. For more information, visit UNM Press.
