Senators’ Votes on Spending Bill to Prevent Government Shutdown

The Senate voted 62 to 38 to advance a bill to fund the federal government through September and avoid a shutdown on Saturday. The bill is expected to be approved after a final vote. The measure required 60 votes to pass, with Republicans and 10 Democrats voting “yes” to overcome a filibuster. Democratic leader Chuck Schumer initially opposed the bill, favoring a shorter extension for bipartisan agreement, but later decided to vote in favor to prevent a shutdown. The spending bill, which passed the House along party lines, gives the Trump administration discretion over federal spending and flexibility to the Department of Government Efficiency. Independent senators Bernie Sanders and Angus King, who caucus with the Democrats, also supported the bill. The final vote on the bill is forthcoming, and it is expected to pass with a simple majority.
