DOE Investigating University of New Mexico

The University of New Mexico, along with several other universities, is currently under investigation by the Department of Education for allegedly using race-exclusionary practices in their graduate programs. The investigations follow the release of a Dear Colleague Letter by the DOE Office for Civil Rights, which emphasized the need to end the use of racial preferences and stereotypes in academic programs. These universities are accused of partnering with “The Ph.D. Project,” a program that limits eligibility based on the race of participants. Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated that the purpose of these investigations is to ensure that all students are protected from illegal discrimination and are assessed based on merit and accomplishment rather than the color of their skin. The Dear Colleague Letter was released on Feb. 14, with the investigations into graduate programs announced a month later. A total of 50 universities, including UNM, are currently under investigation for these practices. The DOE is committed to ensuring that universities do not discriminate against students based on race or race stereotypes.
