Adnan Syed Sentenced to Time Served in ‘Serial’ Podcast Case by Formal Judge

Adnan Syed, the subject of the popular true-crime podcast “Serial,” was formally sentenced by a Maryland judge to time already served in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend in 1999. The judge modified Syed’s sentence under a new state law that provides a pathway to release for individuals convicted of crimes committed as minors. Syed, who was 17 at the time of the murder, will serve five years of supervised probation.

During the sentencing hearing, the judge allowed Syed to travel to Washington, D.C., and Virginia for work and family reasons. Syed, now 43, has a job at Georgetown University and has family in Virginia. While his defense attorney requested unsupervised probation, the judge decided against it, citing the seriousness of the charges.

Syed, who has maintained his innocence, was initially released from prison in 2022 after prosecutors found issues with the case, only to have his conviction reinstated on appeal. The victim’s family expressed relief at the sentencing, thanking the court for allowing them to participate in the legal proceedings.

The current Baltimore state’s attorney, Ivan Bates, has stated that his office believes in the jury’s verdict and has no plans to continue investigating the case. This marks the end of a long legal saga surrounding Syed’s conviction and subsequent release, bringing closure to a case that attracted global attention.
