Powerful spring storm expected to impact New Mexico beginning on Thursday

A powerful spring storm is set to bring high winds, rain, and snow to New Mexico on Thursday and Friday. Windy conditions on Wednesday saw gusts of up to 40 mph, with temperatures slightly cooler after a weak storm system passed through. The upcoming storm will bring even stronger winds, gusting over 35 mph in many areas. Blowing dust and extreme fire danger are possible, particularly in southern and eastern New Mexico.

Overnight Thursday into Friday, winds could gust as high as 60 mph in the south, with a cold front bringing rain and snow across the state. Snow squalls may reduce visibility in western New Mexico, while heavy snowfall and rain are expected in the northern part of the state. Westerly winds could reach 80 mph in eastern New Mexico on Friday, causing blowing dust and a high fire danger.

Scattered rain and snow showers will persist on Saturday before quieter weather returns on Sunday. Another storm is expected next week, bringing strong winds again on Tuesday.
