Bill Passed by New Mexico Senate Establishes Psilocybin Therapy Program

New Mexico Senate Passes Bill to Establish Therapeutic Psilocybin Program

The New Mexico Senate has approved a bill proposed by Sen. Jeff Steinborn (D) to establish a therapeutic psilocybin program in the state. The legislation, known as the Medical Psilocybin Act, would allow patients with qualifying conditions to access and use psilocybin under the guidance of a licensed healthcare provider.

Steinborn emphasized the need for a carefully calculated and patient-centered program, developed by the Department of Health, to provide relief for patients dealing with various conditions, including end-of-life anxiety. The bill would only allow the administration of psilocybin in a medical setting by licensed providers, ensuring safe and controlled use of the psychedelic substance.

The legislation also includes provisions for state oversight, training for clinicians and producers, dose regulation, and the approval of additional qualifying conditions by the Department of Health. The bill would create a framework for therapy sessions, including preparation, administration, and follow-up integration sessions.

The proposed bill aims to address major treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, substance use disorders, and end-of-life care, providing new hope for patients in need. The Senate also approved the creation of two new state funds to support the implementation of the program and further research into the medical benefits of psilocybin.

If enacted, the Medical Psilocybin Act would establish a regulated system for the beneficial use of psilocybin, offering a breakthrough medical treatment option for New Mexicans. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration, where it is expected to garner further support.
