White House announces return of Mar-a-Lago search records by FBI to Trump

The White House announced that the FBI had returned boxes of documents to former President Donald Trump that were seized from his Florida property after he left office. Trump celebrated the return of the documents on social media, claiming that it was proof that he had done nothing wrong. White House staffers were seen loading 15 boxes onto Air Force One to return them to Florida. White House communications director Steven Cheung stated that the documents were taken during “unlawful and illegal raids” and were now being returned to Trump. Counselor to the president Alina Habba criticized the special counsel who had investigated Trump, calling it a hoax and claiming that the documents were irrelevant to the investigation. Trump had been charged in 2023 for retaining national defense information, making false statements, and conspiring to obstruct justice, but the case was dismissed by a federal judge. Trump’s co-defendants in the case also had their charges dropped by the Justice Department last month. The retrieval of the documents was seen as a victory for Trump, who believed that justice had been served and that he had been unfairly targeted by his political opponents.
