Man arrested for identity theft after using dead man’s identity for 50 years
After decades of living as Walter Lee Coffman, a man was arrested for identity theft after it was revealed that he had been using the identity of a dead man for nearly 50 years. Stephen Craig Campbell, 76, was charged with misuse of a passport after authorities discovered he had been living under the name of a University of Arkansas graduate who died in 1975.
Campbell had allegedly fled Wyoming to avoid attempted murder charges and assumed the identity of Walter Lee Coffman to evade capture. This came as a shock to Coffman’s family, who described Campbell’s actions as “desecrating” Coffman’s good name. It was revealed that Coffman had died in a car crash on his way home after visiting his fiancée.
The case highlights the importance of safeguarding personal information and the devastating impact identity theft can have on victims and their families. Campbell now faces legal consequences for his actions and the deception he maintained for five decades.
