Owner of North Carolina Company Admits Guilt in Attempted Technology Sale to China

David C. Bohmerwald, the owner of Components Cooper Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina, pleaded guilty in federal court to attempting to sell electronic devices with military applications to China without a required U.S. government license. Bohmerwald purchased 100 accelerometers and attempted to export them to a company in China. Accelerometers are used in aerospace and military applications. The electronics company notified law enforcement, and a federal agent intercepted the accelerometers in a package falsely listed as worth $100 when it was actually worth nearly $20,000. Bohmerwald admitted to acquiring the technology for a Chinese company while aware of export restrictions. He could face up to 20 years in prison. Homeland Security Investigations have commended the disruption of the illegal scheme, stating that it prevents the unauthorized use of sensitive technology in nefarious ways. Bohmerwald is scheduled for sentencing in mid-May. His lawyers did not respond to requests for comment. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Copyright © 2025 ABC11-WTVD-TV/DT.
