New Mineral Species Discovered by New Mexico Bureau of Geology – Los Alamos Reporter

Three new minerals have been discovered in New Mexico and named after prominent geologists from the state. Raydemarkite, virgilluethite, and stunorthropite were found on Cookes Peak in Luna County and are now on display at the New Mexico Mineral Museum. These minerals were named after Ramon S. DeMark, Dr. Virgil W. Lueth, and Dr. Stuart A. Northrop, who have made significant contributions to the field of geology in New Mexico.

Raydemarkite, named after DeMark, consists of colorless, needle-shaped crystals. Virgilluethite, named after Lueth, features green crystals with a platy growth habit. Stunorthropite, named after Northrop, is found as milky-white crystals formed from the alteration of sidwillite.

New Mexico Tech, also known as New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, is celebrating these discoveries. The university is dedicated to research, innovation, and education and is accredited as a doctoral degree-granting institution. With over 40 percent of its students identifying as Hispanic, New Mexico Tech is recognized as a Hispanic-serving institution.
