New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed three important pieces of legislation aimed at addressing crime and behavioral health issues in the state. At a ceremony in Santa Fe, the governor signed House Bill 8, Senate Bill 1, and Senate Bill 3, emphasizing the collaborative effort of lawmakers in both chambers to make these issues a priority for the session.
The new laws come after a failed special session on public safety last summer and aim to provide better care for the most vulnerable residents while keeping communities safe. House Speaker Javier Martínez praised the bipartisan effort to address these challenging issues.
In addition to these bills, the governor outlined her priorities for the rest of the session, including pretrial detention, changes to the Children’s Code, and gun violence prevention. Lujan Grisham also expressed concerns about potential federal budget cuts to Medicaid, which could have a significant impact on New Mexico’s health care system. She indicated that a special session in October may be necessary depending on the outcome of federal actions.
