Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has taken action to fire over 100 intelligence officers from 15 agencies for using a government chat platform to discuss topics such as polyamory, gender transition surgery, and politics. The chat tool was overseen by the National Security Agency, with each intelligence agency having their own internal collaboration chat tools. Gabbard stated that this conduct was a violation of trust and professionalism.
Conservative commentator Christopher Rufo first reported the existence of the chats, sharing transcripts of the conversations that included political discussions and some individuals celebrating the death of televangelist Pat Robertson. Gabbard has directed all intelligence agencies to identify and terminate the employees involved, as well as revoke their security clearances in an effort to root out bad actors in the spy agencies and restore public trust.
Elon Musk, who is helping oversee President Trump’s effort to reduce the federal workforce, referenced the need for “MAJOR house cleaning” in response to the revelations. The National Security Agency is investigating the inappropriate discussions by intelligence personnel on the chat platform.
Gabbard’s office and the CIA have also sought to fire intelligence officers involved in diversity programs, but a federal judge has temporarily put the dismissals on hold pending a review. The employees have requested reassignment and questioned the legality of their impending termination, arguing a lack of due process. The judge is expected to make a ruling on the case soon.
