Ex-BCSO undersheriff steps down following DWI controversy

Former Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputy Jeffrey Hammerel has resigned from his position on Tuesday in connection to the DWI Deception scandal. The scandal involves a conspiracy to dismiss DWI cases by not showing up to court in exchange for money and gifts. Hammerel has accepted a plea deal and has admitted to his involvement in the scheme. Additionally, attorney Thomas Clear III and his paralegal Rick Menez, who were also part of the conspiracy, have taken plea deals. BCSO undersheriff Johann Jareno resigned the day before Hammerel over his alleged involvement in the DWI scheme.

Sheriff Allen of BCSO has stated that the department upholds high ethical and professional standards and will not tolerate any violation of the public’s trust. The matter is now in the hands of the federal justice system, and the department remains committed to transparency and accountability.

Hammerel’s guilty plea marks the sixth in the ongoing DWI scandal, with former Albuquerque police officers, Clear, and Mendez also involved. Jareno has been added to the local district attorney’s Brady-Gigilo list, which lists officers who are not considered credible in court. The entire scandal has brought to light the corruption within local law enforcement and the serious consequences of violating the public’s trust.
