Bernalillo County Commissioners Vote to Refer Ethics Complaint to Review Board
Bernalillo County Commissioners voted 4-1 to send a complaint against deputy county treasurer Linda Stover to the Bernalillo County Code of Conduct Review Board. The complaint alleges that Stover violated a county ordinance prohibiting former elected officials from accepting employment with the county for at least a year after leaving office. Stover’s hiring by newly elected treasurer Tim Eichenberg raised concerns among commissioners, leading to the decision to refer the matter to the ethics board.
Eichenberg defended his hiring decision, stating that he had the right to choose his deputy treasurer regardless of any restrictions from commissioners. However, Commissioner Walt Benson voted against the motion, arguing that it went against state law. The commissioners’ actions have drawn scrutiny, with the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government filing a complaint regarding possible violations of the Open Meetings Act.
Commissioner Barbara Baca expressed her belief that both Eichenberg and Stover violated the code of conduct, stating that they ignored and disregarded the county’s standards. Chair Eric Olivas highlighted the importance of maintaining integrity within the government and the need for public confidence in its operations.
The Code of Conduct Review Board, appointed by commissioners, will now review the complaint against Stover. A date for the hearing has not yet been set. The commissioners’ decision reflects their commitment to upholding ethical standards in local government and ensuring accountability among public officials.
