Ancient Life in New Mexico: A 300-Million-Year Story

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science has recently opened a new exhibit titled “Ancient Life,” showcasing life forms from 300 million years ago in the Paleozoic Era. Curated by Spencer Lucas, the exhibit presents a unique look at what life was like in New Mexico during that time period, near the Equator with multiple seas, jungles, and beaches. Lucas, who has been working on New Mexico fossils since 1990, collaborated with artists and sculptors to bring the ancient creatures to life for visitors. This exhibit, the first renovation since 1987, features over 300 fossils collected in New Mexico, some of which have never been seen before. With a vision to share scientific knowledge with a broader audience, Lucas anticipates over a million visitors will have the chance to view the exhibit in the coming years. The “Ancient Life” exhibit is a unique opportunity for the public to learn about the ancient history of New Mexico through the lens of paleontology.
