New Mexico legislators delay legislation prohibiting men from participating in women’s sports

New Mexico Congress Tables Bill Upholding Trump Order Banning Men From Women’s Sports

In a recent development, members of New Mexico’s congress decided to table a bill that aimed to support President Donald Trump’s executive order prohibiting men from participating in women’s sports. The House Committee voted 4-2 in favor of tabling the bill, with Republican Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block opposing the decision.

The bill, sponsored by Republican state Rep. Andrea Reeb, was described as a measure to protect female athletes from potential injuries and preserve their opportunities in sports. Despite strong support from some lawmakers, including Block, the bill is now deemed unlikely to progress further.

During the committee hearing, Lord emphasized the importance of protecting girls’ safety and ensuring fair competition. The bill received testimony from Payton McNabb, a female athlete who suffered serious injuries during a game against a male player.

While Democrat lawmakers in the state have historically opposed similar legislation, a recent poll revealed that a majority of New Mexico voters support separating sports based on sex. The survey conducted by Wick Insights on behalf of the Independent Women’s Forum found that 94% of voters believe in the importance of separate locker rooms, and 84% support segregating sports by sex.

Despite the bill being tabled, the issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports continues to be a contentious and polarizing topic in New Mexico.
