Two Disgraced APD DWI Officers Face Federal Charges and Accept Plea Deals

Former Albuquerque Police Officers Honorio Alba and Joshua Montaño pled guilty to charges of bribery in connection with DWI cases. The U.S. Attorney’s Office filed indictments detailing their involvement in a bribery scheme within the APD’s DWI unit. The officers accepted cash and gifts in exchange for not charging DWI offenders, working with an attorney’s employee, Ricardo Mendez. Alba and Montaño face potential sentences of 10 to 20 years in federal prison and monetary restitution.

A total of 12 officers were involved in the scandal, with Alba and Montaño being the first to be charged. The Albuquerque Police Department commented that 10 officers have resigned, retired, or been terminated in connection to the investigation. The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office are conducting investigations to determine further charges against additional individuals involved in the bribery scheme.

APD Chief Harold Medina expressed his hope that the investigation will hold all accountable for their criminal conduct. The FBI’s swift action in the case was noted by U.S. Attorney Alex Uballez, who emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and not yet concluded. The future of the case may be affected by potential changes in federal administration and U.S. Attorney appointments. Despite uncertainties, the commitment of law enforcement officials to uncover the truth and hold individuals accountable remains steadfast.
