Two children in Detroit died of suspected exposure to the cold after being found unresponsive in the van where the family was living. The children, ages 2 and 9, were discovered not breathing by their mother at around noon, after the van ran out of gas in a casino parking garage. The temperatures were around 12 degrees with wind chills of 6 degrees. The mother realized one child was not breathing and called for help, but tragically realized a second child was also not breathing. Both children were taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. Three other children survived. The Detroit police department has opened an investigation into the incident. Captain Nathan Duda emphasized the need for people to utilize resources such as shelters, churches, or other facilities to stay warm during extreme weather. He also urged people to call 911 if they see someone in need of help during the cold. Duda expressed his sadness over the situation, particularly as a father, and acknowledged the difficult circumstances the family is facing. He emphasized the importance of examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two children and working towards preventing similar tragedies in the future.
