Justice Department directs charges against NYC Mayor Eric Adams to be dropped

Acting U.S. Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove has ordered federal prosecutors in New York to drop corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The charges, which include bribery and fraud, were brought against Adams in September for allegedly accepting $100,000 worth of free plane tickets and luxury hotel stays in a corruption scheme involving Turkish nationals. Adams has pleaded not guilty and claims the charges are politically motivated. The dismissal of the charges is without prejudice, meaning they could potentially be refiled in the future. The charges have not yet been dismissed, and will require a motion from federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York, which would need to be reviewed by a judge. The decision to drop the charges comes as a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney is set to be confirmed, following the resignation of the Biden-appointed U.S. attorney who brought the charges. Adams’ attorney reached out to Justice Department leadership in January about dropping the case. The situation is still developing, and updates are expected as new information becomes available.
