Judge halts transfer of three Venezuelan migrants detained at New Mexico camp

New Mexico is currently in the midst of a heated debate over the transfer of migrants to Guantanamo Bay. The Trump administration has announced plans to move suspected members of a Venezuelan gang to the detention center in Cuba. However, three Venezuelan migrants who have been seeking asylum in America and held in ICE custody at the Otero County Processing Center for over a year are not included in this transfer. The ACLU, along with two other organizations, is representing the migrants and has filed a petition to have them removed from custody, citing concerns over indefinite detention and the possibility that Venezuela may not accept them back. Documents submitted to court indicate that the U.S. has previously flown immigrant detainees to Guantanamo, sparking fear among the migrants that they would be next. A federal judge has granted a request to halt the transfer of these three migrants at least until a hearing in March. This case has put New Mexico at the center of the national discussion over the controversial practice of transferring migrants to Guantanamo Bay.
