State Council of New Mexico Gathers at Roundhouse to Advocate for Workers’ Rights

IAM members from New Mexico Locals 1635, 794, and 2515, along with top officials, recently made significant strides in lobbying efforts at the Roundhouse in Santa Fe. Led by IAM International President Brian Bryant, the group successfully pushed for the passage of the Employees Free Speech Act, which aims to protect employees from employer monitoring of political activities and mandatory anti-union meetings.

The IAM members also advocated for paid family medical leave to support working caregivers within their communities. Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez emphasized the importance of engaging members in legislative action to bring about real change in their work lives and communities. New officers were installed at a council meeting, where the focus was on updating bylaws to reflect necessary changes and continuing the fight for worker-friendly laws in New Mexico.

The efforts of these IAM members reflect a larger trend across the country of organized labor advocating for workers’ rights and needed legislation. The group remains committed to fighting for laws that support workers and will continue to push for positive changes in New Mexico.
