New Mexico Supreme Court Seeks Punishment for Lawyer Involved in DWI Bribery Scandal

The New Mexico Supreme Court has issued an order giving Albuquerque attorney Thomas Clear III one week to explain why he should not face disciplinary action, including suspension, in connection with a long-running DWI bribery scandal involving law enforcement officers. Clear has not been charged with any crimes but his law office was raided by federal agents. The court order references news reports and court documents suggesting Clear could be implicated in the conspiracy. At least a dozen Albuquerque police officers and a Bernalillo County deputy have been placed on leave in connection with the investigation, with many resigning. Two former Albuquerque officers who resigned amid the investigation were placed on administrative leave from the state Children, Youth and Families Department last week. State police Chief Troy Weisler denounced the scheme and promised swift action against any officers involved. Clear has not responded to the disciplinary proceedings in state or federal courts. The federal judge has given him 30 days to respond while the state Supreme Court has demanded a response by February 10. The justices ordered Clear to show cause why he should not face discipline for his alleged misconduct.
