Residents of Magdalena, New Mexico are facing a setback in their efforts to bring a much-needed grocery store to their community. The Magdalena Food Cooperative, founded by Osiris Navarro, has been working to open a store that would provide access to fresh produce and meat in an area where the nearest option is a Walmart 30 miles away.
Despite initial plans to open in September with $250,000 in federal grants, the cooperative recently received a letter from the National Cooperative Business Association denying them funding. This news has been disheartening for the community, as the grocery store would not only provide essential food options but also support local agriculture and fresh produce.
Board member Julian Swain emphasized the importance of the grocery store, stating that it would benefit many residents who currently have limited access to healthy foods. While the setback is challenging, members of the cooperative remain hopeful that they will secure funding in the future and continue their mission to bring a grocery store to Magdalena.
