Proposed Bill Aims to Establish Alert System for Missing Indigenous Individuals in New Mexico

Two New Mexico lawmakers, Sen. Angel Charley and Rep. Michelle Paulene Abeyta, are sponsoring Senate Bill 41 to create a “Turquoise Alert” system for Indigenous people who go missing. With 198 Native Americans missing in New Mexico and the Navajo Nation, the alert system aims to help find missing individuals within the crucial first 48 hours. New Mexico Indian Affairs Secretary Josett Monette supports the bill, stating that the alert system is needed to ensure critical hours are not missed. The system would function similarly to Amber Alerts and would be managed by the Department of Public Safety. If passed, the bill would amend the Missing Persons Information and Reporting Act to include the Turquoise Alert. Other states like Colorado, Washington, and California have already passed similar legislation, leading to successful outcomes in locating missing individuals. Lawmakers believe that the Turquoise Alert system in New Mexico will be a powerful tool in helping families find their missing loved ones.
