Postal Service employee confesses to stealing $300,000 in cash and collectibles

U.S. Postal Service supervisor Joivian Tjuana Hayes pleaded guilty to federal charges in California for stealing over $300,000 worth of checks, collectibles, and other goods. Hayes admitted to one count of mail theft and one count of unlawful transfer, possession, and use of means of identification. She stole at least 20 checks worth approximately $284,000 by forging signatures and also stole $3,000 in money orders. Hayes faces up to 15 years in prison for the top charge and another five for the mail theft charge.

This is not the first incident of a U.S. Postal Service worker stealing valuable mail. In recent cases, an employee in Connecticut admitted to stealing cash and gift cards, and a man in New York City pleaded guilty to stealing sports memorabilia. Missing mail should be reported to the Postal Inspector Service for investigation.

To prevent theft, the Postal Service recommends separating registered mail, ensuring loose mail is not left outside bins, and comparing outgoing mail against customer orders. Consumers are advised to use money orders instead of mailing checks or cash, as a money order can be replaced if lost or stolen.
