Trump fires head of the National Archives

President Donald Trump has dismissed the head of the National Archives, Colleen Shogan, following through on a promise he made last month to change leadership at the agency. The White House official, Sergio Gor, announced Shogan’s dismissal on X, stating that it was at Trump’s direction. Shogan had alerted the Justice Department in 2022 that Trump had potentially mishandled classified documents, which led to a criminal case against him. Although Shogan was not leading the agency at the time, Trump eventually returned some of the documents but kept others. The FBI conducted a criminal investigation into Trump, but the case was dismissed by a Trump-appointed federal judge last year. Since taking office, the Trump administration has also dismissed other officials who were involved in investigations against the president, including Justice Department lawyers and FBI officials. Two groups of FBI agents have sued the DOJ, claiming that a survey they filled out about their roles was used to identify targets for dismissal. Overall, the dismissal of Shogan and other officials involved in the case against Trump highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding the former president’s handling of classified documents.
