Jones County firefighters in Mississippi will now be able to stay on the scene longer thanks to a new mobile air-and-light trailer equipped with a compressor system that refills self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs) on-site. The Sharon Volunteer Fire Department recently took possession of the “Delta Fire & Safety Trailer,” which contains a compressor system that can fill four SCBA bottles at a time. This allows firefighters to refill their oxygen tanks without leaving the active scene, improving efficiency and response time.
The trailer, purchased with funds from a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant, will be dispatched throughout Jones County to assist at large-scale events. In addition to the compressor system, the trailer also features scene lights for nighttime firefighting and heat/air conditioning for firefighter rehabilitation. Training on the new equipment began recently, with Sharon VFD handling maintenance and housing for the unit.
Previously, firefighters had to leave the scene to refill their SCBAs at a firehouse with a cascade system. Now, with the mobile compressor system, they can stay on-site and continue their work without interruption. This technology will greatly benefit firefighters in Jones County, improving their ability to respond to emergencies and ensuring their safety and efficiency in their operations.
