Happy Real Estate Agents Day in New Mexico!

A group of realtors gathered at the Capitol in New Mexico for Realtor Day to advocate for and against various housing bills. They supported legislation that would make it easier to build more housing quickly and oppose a bill that would prohibit private equity from buying single-family homes. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is seeking $100 million in new spending to address homelessness and help first-time homebuyers. Various housing-related bills are being proposed, including measures to address source-of-income discrimination, rent control, establishing a Governor’s Office of Housing, banning restrictive covenants, and funding for affordable housing programs. Over 50 bills mentioning housing have been introduced this session.

Additionally, U.S. Reps. Melanie Stansbury and Gabe Vasquez gave speeches at the Roundhouse, and lawmakers are considering legalizing medicinal use of psilocybin mushrooms. The Senate Conservation Committee approved bills to protect New Mexico’s rivers and streams. Crime bills, including increasing penalties for making shooting threats and banning devices that convert firearms, also advanced in the House.
