New Mexico Officials Advocate for Task Force to Combat Illegal Marijuana

New Mexico regulators are pushing for legislation to create a task force to crack down on illicit cannabis operations in the state. The Cannabis Control Division (CCD) is throwing its support behind House Bill 10, which would assign six law enforcement officials to investigate and stop illegal cannabis businesses. The bill would also give CCD officials the authority to seize illegal products. Currently, regulators can only report illegal activity to law enforcement, but the task force would help expedite investigations and ease the burden on police.
CCD Director Todd Stevens emphasized the need for the task force to address illicit operations that burden legal cannabis businesses. The adult-use cannabis law in New Mexico went into effect in 2021, with the first regulated sale in 2022. The task force is seen as crucial to enforcing the legal market and protecting legitimate operators from illegal competition. Legislators are under pressure to act quickly to establish this task force and strengthen the state’s cannabis regulations.
