Increase compensation for foster families in New Mexico

Experts Mike Hart and George Davis addressed the Senate Judiciary Committee, highlighting the challenges faced by New Mexico’s foster care system. They emphasized that new laws or more funding for the Children, Youth and Families Department will not necessarily improve the lives of foster children. However, they agreed that providing more support and resources to foster families could be beneficial.

With over 2,000 children in state custody, Davis pointed out that the agency is hindered by staffing shortages, lack of foster families, and insufficient services for those families. Hart emphasized the need for the department to be properly supported.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has proposed exempting foster families and grandparents from income tax and increasing stipends for foster families. The experts believe that these initiatives could help recruit more foster families. They also mentioned the successful model in Utah where a nonprofit was created to support foster families.

Committee Chair Sen. Joseph Cervantes revealed that legislation is being drafted to reform CYFD, with Cabinet Secretary Theresa Casados expected to present the draft soon. Overall, the experts highlighted the importance of providing adequate support and resources to improve the foster care system in New Mexico.
