Experts in child protection urge increased financial support for foster families

Experts Mike Hart and George Davis appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee in New Mexico to address issues within the state’s child protection agency. They emphasized that new laws or more money would not solve the problems faced by foster children, but agreed that additional funding for foster families could be a beneficial step. Davis highlighted challenges such as inadequate staffing, a lack of foster families, and limited services for those families. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham recently proposed exempting foster families from personal income tax and increasing stipends to encourage more people to become foster parents. The experts suggested public service announcements and creating a nonprofit organization, similar to one in Utah, to support foster families. Committee Chair Sen. Joseph Cervantes mentioned that legislation to reform the agency was in progress, with CYFD Cabinet Secretary Theresa Casados expected to present draft legislation soon. This discussion sheds light on the ongoing efforts to address issues within New Mexico’s child protection system.
