The New Mexico strike team of firefighters has returned home after a successful deployment to southern California. The team of 25 firefighters from New Mexico worked in collaboration with Cal Fire, focusing on structural preparation, triaging, and preventing fires from reaching structures. They also engaged with the local community, offering support and supplies to those affected by the devastating wildfires.
Nathan Miller, a wildlife superintendent of the Santa Fe Fire Department, emphasized the importance of being there for the community in times of crisis. He noted that fire season in New Mexico is now a year-round occurrence, requiring constant readiness and preparedness.
Now that they are back home, the team plans to use the leadership development and training they acquired during their deployment to further enhance their skills for future emergencies. The experience in California has provided valuable lessons that can be applied to their work in New Mexico.
