Inmate from North Carolina accused of attempted murder flees through ventilation system

In North Carolina, an inmate named John Matthew Nigh escaped from the Craven County detention center by removing a grating in his cell and entering a ventilation system. His cellmates helped him by stuffing a mattress to make it seem like he was still in his cell. Nigh had a history of criminal activity, including serving time for burglary and facing charges of resisting police. He was also arrested in Onslow County for allegedly shooting at deputies. The U.S. Marshals are assisting in the search for Nigh, and a statewide alert has been issued to law enforcement.

The inmate’s court records were not accessible online, and it is unclear if he has legal representation. Nigh is considered armed and dangerous, and authorities are warning the public to be cautious. In June, he was arrested for attempted murder after firing a handgun at deputies while they were trying to apprehend him on warrants out of Pamlico County. No one was injured in the incident. Nigh had recently been transferred to the Craven County jail to face charges in that jurisdiction. The investigation into his escape is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are working together to locate and apprehend him.
