The Trump administration announced the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America last Friday, but Google and Apple maps have yet to reflect the change. Google announced on Monday that it would update its maps once the U.S. government updated its official sources. This follows President Trump’s executive order on his first day in office renaming the gulf and Mount McKinley back to its original name.
The U.S. Department of the Interior confirmed the implementation of the executive order, but official government maps have not been updated. Google stated that once the Geographic Names Information System (G.N.I.S.) updated the names, they would quickly make the changes to their Maps application. The name change would apply to Denali in Alaska as well.
Google’s Maps application will show the Gulf of America for users in the United States, while users in Mexico will still see “Gulf of Mexico.” International users will see both names side by side, with the Gulf of Mexico name appearing first followed by the Gulf of America in parentheses. Google has a practice of using different names for the same places based on geopolitical disputes.
When the Obama administration changed the name of Mount McKinley to Denali, Google updated its Maps three days later. Google’s plans to update names in accordance with government sources highlight their commitment to accuracy and official recognition.
