Several public school districts in New Mexico have responded to President Donald Trump’s executive order rescinding federal protections against ICE arrests at or near schools. Albuquerque Public Schools, Las Cruces Public Schools, and Santa Fe Public Schools have issued guidance stating that immigration officials are not allowed on campus, and student information regarding immigration status will not be shared. Additionally, these districts do not collect data on students’ immigration status. The New Mexico Public Education Department has also sent guidance to education leaders regarding immigration policies. Attorney General Raúl Torrez emphasized the importance of protecting families, especially children, from policies that create fear and destabilize communities. The guidance includes information for various sectors, such as schools, healthcare facilities, and places of worship, on dealing with immigration enforcement. The goal is to uphold the rule of law while ensuring access to education, healthcare, and justice without fear of persecution. This response from the different school districts and the Department of Justice shows a commitment to protecting students and families in the face of changing federal policies.
