Investigation into DWI scandal involves over 10 officers

There has been a shocking revelation in Albuquerque as court filings have accused more than 10 police officers from Albuquerque Police, state police, and Bernalillo County deputies of taking bribes to have DWI cases dismissed. Legal expert John Day stated that this scandal is an “infection of corrupt police officers” that extends beyond just APD to include the Bernalillo Sheriff’s Office and state police.

The scandal dates back to 2008 and involves private investigator Ricardo Mendez, who pleaded guilty to charges including racketeering and bribery. Mendez is cooperating with authorities to build a case against other participants in the scheme. A total of at least 13 officers have been named in the investigation, with some already facing consequences such as retirement, resignation, termination, or leave.

Court documents indicate that Mendez worked with attorneys defending DWI charges to ensure cases were dismissed, with plans for recruitment of younger officers into the scheme. The district attorney’s office has had to dismiss 214 DWI cases due to credibility issues with officers under investigation, and they anticipate having to drop more cases as the investigation continues.
