Federal Workers Offered Buyout by Trump Administration to Resign

The Trump administration is offering all federal workers the opportunity to take a “deferred resignation” with a severance package of eight months of pay and benefits. They expect 5-10% of the workforce to resign, potentially saving around $100 billion. The offer will be distributed through a new system that allows officials to email all federal employees at once with a draft resignation letter. The resignation period will run from Tuesday through Feb. 6. Workers who choose to stay will be appreciated for their service. Elon Musk, now in charge of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, previously sent a similar email to employees at Twitter, now X, asking them to opt-in to continue working. The subject line of the email to federal workers is “A fork in the road,” a reference to an art piece commissioned by Musk. It is unclear if he is involved in the current effort. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the importance of federal employees showing up to work in taxpayer-funded buildings to serve the American people. The initiative reflects the administration’s goal of improving the federal workforce and ensuring those who remain are committed to making America great.
